Procedures Offered

The Urology team at Windom Area Health offers a variety of procedures to address each patient's needs. These procedures include:

Cystoscopy

A cystoscopy is simply a look inside the bladder and urethra using a very thin tube with a camera on the end, called a cystoscope.

A urologist performs a cystoscopy to understand why someone is having urinary symptoms, such as:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Frequent urinary infections
  • Painful urination
  • Trouble with bladder control
  • Checking for bladder stones, tumors, or inflammation

It can also be used to monitor bladder conditions.

The whole process usually takes 5–15 minutes.

Circumcisions

A circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin, which is the fold of skin that covers the tip of the penis.

In a medical setting, circumcision may be performed to address:

  • Phimosis — when the foreskin is too tight to retract
  • Recurrent infections — such as repeated balanitis or UTIs
  • Painful or difficult urination caused by foreskin problems
  • Certain skin conditions affecting the foreskin

It can also be done for cultural or religious reasons, but medically it’s typically done for comfort or preventing ongoing issues.

Lithotripsy

A lithotripsy is a treatment that breaks kidney stones into tiny pieces so they can pass out of the body more easily.

Urologists use lithotripsy when a kidney stone is:

  • Too big to pass on its own
  • Causing pain
  • Blocking urine flow
  • Leading to infection

It helps avoid more invasive surgery.

PSA Testing

A PSA test is a simple blood test that measures the level of prostate‑specific antigen (PSA) in your bloodstream. PSA is a protein made by the prostate gland.

PSA testing helps check for:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Enlarged prostate (BPH)
  • Prostate inflammation or infection

It’s often part of routine screening for men, especially as they get older.

Urinalysis (UA)

A urinalysis is a test that examines a sample of your urine to check how well your urinary system is working.

A urinalysis helps identify problems in the kidneys, bladder, urethra, or prostate (indirectly).

It’s commonly used to look for:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Blood in the urine
  • Kidney disease
  • Kidney stones
  • Signs of inflammation
  • Protein or sugar in the urine
Vasectomy

A vasectomy is a simple procedure that prevents pregnancy by blocking sperm from leaving the body. It’s one of the most common procedures urologists perform.

A vasectomy doesn’t affect hormones, sex drive, or the ability to have erections. It only stops sperm from mixing with semen, so ejaculation still happens normally—just without sperm.
