CT vs. MRI: What’s the Difference?

Windom Area Health offers an in-house computed tomography (CT) scanner and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) truck that comes three times a week. Though they are both similar in appearance, the exams that are performed are very different. A few frequently asked questions are: what is the difference between the two, how long does each exam take and what scan is best for you?

Computed Tomography (CT) Scanners

In 2011 Windom Area Health installed a 64-slice CT scanner capable of performing very precise and high quality scans such as angiography and 3D scans. CT excels at fast scan times which can be completed in as little as two minutes with the longest scans being fifteen minutes. Fast scan times are crucial in trauma situations such as vehicle accidents or stroke evaluation. CT is also excellent at displaying bony anatomy, tumors or types of bleeds.  CT uses X-rays to obtain images and though the dose is low, this is where MRI has an advantage.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses magnets and radio waves which results in no radiation dose. The benefits of MRI is the superior detail in scanning soft tissue anatomy such as: shoulders involving torn rotator cuffs, knees, breasts and brain. MRI will often be preferred to rule out sports injuries, chronic pain or migraines.  If you ever have an MRI you may experience the loud noises the scanner makes and the longer scan times ranging from 30-45 minutes.

So which scan is best for you? As you can see there are some major differences between the two. Factors such as your age, claustrophobia, pacemakers, metal implants, patients overall symptoms and severity will play a role in which modality will be chosen. As always, you will consult your physician when searching for a diagnosis and they will get you scheduled for the best study. We look forward to seeing you at Windom Area Health.
