This July, the Windom Area Hospital is focusing on Oncology/Skin Cancer Awareness. During the summer time, it is especially important to focus on keeping your skin safe from the harmful UV rays. It is important to do routine checks on your skin to see if there have been any new developments in moles or spots on your skin. If you do see any, consult your doctor right away.
There are multiple forms of skin cancer. The most well known type is melanoma, but it is also the deadliest. Melanoma spreads and can often metastasize. This is why it is important to detect symptoms or signs as quickly as you can to ensure proper care. The simplest way to remember how to self examine your moles or spots is through the ABCDE examination: Asymmetric, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolving. This is helpful in keeping an eye out for any new skin developments.Â
More than one million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year. Being sun safe and having regular checkups will help in early detection. Check out our oncology outreach services by visiting our website or by calling 507-831-0670.
