First Community Health Fair – A Success

Windom Area Health hosted its first-ever Community Health Fair on Wednesday, July 23rd! From 6:30 – 11:00 am, 40 vendor booths spread across the campus hallways, including in the new medical building. The event saw close to 200 guests visit the campus.

Something for everyone

There was something for everyone. The Laboratory department offered a special $100 pricing on three lab panels, Diabetic Education offered free blood sugar testing, and the Wellness Center offered body composition scans, to name a few.

Community vendors represented sectors such as mental health, legal services, wound care, education, finances, social services, end-of-life planning, volunteerism, cancer support, senior services, dentistry, and faith communities. These booths were set up in the hallways of the main floor, the second floor lobby, and the fourth floor commons areas (the third floor is shelled out space for future growth). KDOM was onsite in the morning interviewing vendors and capturing the energy of packed hallways.

Visitors picked up free canvas tote bags and stamp-able “Passport” pamphlets to receive stamps from vendor booths. 25 stamps made you eligible for our prize drawings: Kwik Trip gift cards, flower seed mix, an Echo speaker, Fire tablet, GCI rocker, YETI cooler, and Solo Stove. Check out the Windom Area Health Facebook page for a listing of prize winners. Special thanks goes to Schwalbach Ace Hardware, Kwik Trip, and The Seed Center for helping sponsor these prizes.

Breakfast was especially a hit. Premium Iowa Pork generously supplied 100 pounds of bacon, and the WAH Cafeteria provided the rest of the breakfast spread. The new community room on the fourth floor was the perfect space for guests to socialize and grab a bite.

Lifelong Wellness

While this event was the hospital’s first health fair featuring community-based vendors, it was not its first time offering a health fair. During the annual May hospital week years ago, WAH has hosted health fairs featuring free and discounted health screenings, heel scans, and foot care clinics.

The beauty of this year’s inaugural event was the way it gathered other key voices in our community who encourage lifelong wellness. Windom Area Health is proud to work alongside these other businesses to serve Windom and the surrounding area.

Most of all, it was great morning to visit with community members. So often, we rush from one event to the next, or don’t have conversation beyond pleasantries. This event was a perfect time to slow down and see new faces. These meaningful conversation and pride in our community—that’s what lifelong wellness is all about.

Serving the Community

There have been lots of exciting changes at Windom Area Health—an expanded campus, new providers, and even expanded clinical locations. But the Community Health Fair represented something unchanging at the heart of Windom Area Health: a dedication to the community.
