DAISY Award Honoree: Fall 2024

DAISY Award Honoree: Jared Schmit

Windom Area Health is thrilled to announce Jared Schmit, Outpatient Nursing Supervisor, as our very first DAISY Award Honoree!

Here is the Nomination submitted for Jared:

“Jared is the kind of nurse you wish every nurse could be. He is kind, professional, proficient, and instills confidence in his patients. The reason, for us anyway, that this is SO important is because we have literally run the gamut in treatments, procedures, surgeries, meds, homeopathic remedies, etc., for our daughter, Gabrielle. When you have seen a family member go through the things she has been through, you want your nurse to walk into that room and immediately instill in your loved one and yourself that they have whatever is going on under control.

Jared is 100% that nurse. He is extremely knowledgeable without appearing arrogant, calm without seeming lackadaisical, gentle without appearing unsure or timid in his approach. Gabrielle spent 18 days out of her 23 days of receiving Outpatient IV Antibiotics with Jared. Every time she saw him, she was greeted genuinely and made to feel welcome. He spoke directly to her and told her what he was doing and why and listened to us when we had questions or concerns. He did everything he could to make her feel seen, heard, and important. Jared should absolutely be recognized for his quality of care, dedication, and professionalism.

We are very thankful to have nurses like Jared taking care of Gabrielle.”

Receiving the Award

Jared was presented with an Honoree pin, a copy of his nomination, a beautiful, one of a kind, hand carved Healer’s Touch sculpture from Zimbabwe, and a certificate portfolio on Monday, December 2nd surrounded by family, colleagues, and hospital leadership. There were cinnamon rolls for everyone, as well as punch and coffee as Jared was announced as the Honoree and his nomination was read aloud to the group.

What is the DAISY Award?

The DAISY Award program is the first of its kind that allows patients, families and co-workers a way to honor and thank the nurses that have made a positive impact on them by showing compassion and kindness during their time spent at the hospital. The DAISY Foundation was founded in 1999 by the family of Patrick Barnes as a way to thank the nurses that took extraordinary care of him during his time of need and made an impact on the family with their kindness and compassion. The DAISY Foundation is now an internationally recognized non-profit organization honoring exceptional nurses everywhere. They are present in 6500+ healthcare organizations and across 40+ nations and territories. All Nominees for the DAISY Award receive a DAISY pin as recognition for their kindness and compassion shown. From the nominations received, a blind voting system is used for choosing the DAISY Award recipient. The voting committee is made up of volunteers outside of the hospital, employees and leadership.

How to Nominate

Submit your nominations for the next DAISY Award celebration in May of 2025! The DAISY Award program at WAH offers different ways to nominate a nurse: a handwritten encounter or story on a DAISY nomination form that can be found by the front entrance or the Wound Care Center or by filling out and submitting an online form found at https://windomareahealth.org/daisy-award-nomination-form/.

Congratulations again to Jared for this well-deserved honor!
